Swim Champs
We need everyone to declare for Prelims (Tuesday, July 9th) by Friday at noon. All entries for champs need to be entered by Saturday. A simple "Attending" is what we need so we know who will be swimming and the coaches can put in entries for champs. We will communicate a reminder out, but this needs to be done ASAP so our coaches can put our entries in.
For those that are new, Prelims on Tuesday is where all swimmers will compete individually in the events designated by the coaches. The morning session for 11 and older (11-18) opens at 7:15a, with warmups for our older swimmers designated from 7:40-8am. Prelims for the older kids will begin at 9am. The 10 and younger will begin no earlier than 11:40am with our warm-ups most likely going from 11:40-noon and then the prelims for the 10 and under beginning at 1pm. A more succinct timeline will be given closer to this date.
There are no relays swam at prelims - this is individual events only. We will need at least two timers and 2 clerks. One clerk will be organizing the benches and the other making sure the swimmers are making it to the clerk. All swimmers must check in at the clerk of course or will not be able swim the event. For the parents of older kids, please remind them they have to report to the clerk of course for both prelims and champs!
For the afternoon session with the littles, we will need age group parents to make sure the kids are at the clerk in addition to two timers and one clerk.
Each club will have an A relay (4 kids) for each age group/gender and those individuals will be identified by Tuesday night. This will be based upon time. In a few categories of our club we may be short swimmers for that age group and we will have some younger kids swim up if that is the case.
How prelims work? This is all about time and the fastest 12 times for each age group/gender and not getting DQ'd. Regardless, of what place you end up in a heat, it's all about the child's time. The 12 fastest times will swim at champs for the events. The 13th and 14th places will be designated as "Alternates". Alternates will still need to be prepared to swim at champs, if a one of the top 12 scratches. If you are not going to be able to make Wednesday Swim Champs, your child can scratch within 30 minutes from their event completion. In layman's terms, if your child cannot compete (due to conflict, etc) they can still swim prelims, but will need to scratch if they make finals. The alternates will take there place.
The finals will be held on Wednesday night at Miami Hills for these individual events along with relays One important note is that there is an A final and B final. The A final is the fastest 6 swimmers (1-6) with swimmers 7-12 in the B final. A swimmer in the B final cannot get higher than 7th place even if they swim faster than everyone in the A final.
Two additional notes, that I want to call out. There is no 6 and under category. The boys and girls in 6 and under will compete in the 8 and under category. While your swimmer may not be the fastest, they can still get ribbons from winning their heat as well as they do Hot Heats where this an additional prize for winning the heat.
I've included a few league rules to pass along.
- Swimmers MAY NOT swim out of their age group in individual events.
- Swimmers can move up in age group to fill in a relay only if there are insufficient eligible swimmers.
- Top 12 finishers in each event, plus two alternates will advance to finals. A 30-minute scratch rule will be in effect for prelims. Alternates should plan to attend finals and report to the clerk of course when their event is called.
- The League encourages coaches not to enter swimmers in events for which they are likely to be DQd.
- Swimmers in the “B” final cannot finish higher than 7th place regardless of time. Please be sure your families are educated on how the finals heats and scoring works for champs.
- Rule reminders: Swimmers must be in their team caps or generic caps.
- No club or high school caps (new league rule). No tie back suits arepermitted (USA Swimming rule). Speed/Tech suits are permitted. Only FINA approved suits for 12 & under (USA Swimming rule).Therapeutic/Kinesio tape is not permitted per USA Swimming rules.
- Reporting to the Clerk of Course is mandatory for finals. If your
athlete does not report to clerk of course, an alternate will be put in
his/her place. While our rules do not specify that clerk of course is
mandatory for prelims, it’s a good idea to have everyone report there
to ensure athletes do not miss events.
The logistics of the meet and where our team area will be designated will be published out later in the week. Next week will host a pasta lunch on Monday after practice and the sign up is active for that event. The club will provide drinks and water for the lunch.
I should be getting handicap parking passes and Swim Champs t-shirts for the club on Friday so we will have to hand out before Tuesday.
If you have questions, please let me know.
Thank you!
